No worries- like I said in the OP, my husband and I like to kick off things at Sattui as early as 9AM when they open. I once went to Honig- a winery that has the gimmick where it specializes only in pure Cabernet Sauvignon or Sauvignon Blancs (at the insistence of the owner as opposed to winemaker's thoughts) and they all tasted terrible save for one. Smaller does not necessarily mean better. I mean, direct sales is the only way Sattui makes money, so yeah you need to attract people. And while they have a bunch on site it's in part because you can't pick them up at a Safeway or BevMo like half the valley. For a winery that has been around for over a century I get how they can have a bunch of investments in different varietals. I think there are good selections available with reasonable prices, is a decent place to take novices, and I've had favorable experiences with the people who do the tastings going at non-peak hours has more than once led to interesting conversations and more than once a few pours above the normal tasting quantity. I still like Sattui and stand by my recommendation. (Especially at the latter two- you took my money, the least you can do is take my questions about your product fucking seriously and not look at your customers with contempt.) Crowds that get to claustrophobic levels, expensive tastings that are small and certainly not worth the price, and pourers that just ooze pretentiousness and self importance. See, this is how I feel about the likes of Mondavi, Paraduxx, and even Frank's Family lately. Based on their size you may need to call ahead for an appointment for these two. Baldacci is also a good one on the Silverado Trail side of the valley. Would also recommend the Prager Port Works in St. Their Il Passito is worth the $15 admission onto the grounds, which really are impressive (recreation of a Tuscan castle).īoth of the above are on HWY 29. Its sister winery also owned by the Sattui family is Castello Di Amorosa up the road near Calistoga.

They also have a great deli with wonderful cheeses and does a BBQ on the grounds many weekends. My husband and I make different selections in our tastings- more to select from than just the 6 they give you, and the pours have been decent. Huge selection as the family is some of the oldest winemakers in the region, so lots to choose from yet a tasting runs only $10. They open at 9 AM so the earlier the better for a lot of attention. I prefer it here to Domaine Carneros (I love their wines but the place always seems like a frat house, filled with bachelor and bachelorette parties).Įdit: A few people recommended Frog's Leap, just make sure to make an appointment because I believe they roll on an appointment only system. It is more "corporate" but they are friendly, their bubbles are solid, and they have some surprisingly good still wines that you'll only find at the winery. Lastly, I've always been pleased with Chandon. Went here for the first time when they were first opening up and got to walk around with the owner. Really wonderful wines, small intimate setting. They are kind and knowledgeable without being pretentious the scenery and wine tasting area are amazing as well. Have been there with fellow wine industry friends and very novice wine drinkers from the Midwest, and all had a great time.
